Your Pet Dog May Just Be Your Friend for Life

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them are as big as a baby horse. Let’s take the Saint

Bernard for example. They are very big dogs and weigh more than 200 pounds (90kg). Others

are so small that they can fit inside your purse just like the Chihuahua which is as tall as a

grownup’s hand and weighs about as much as a chicken. There are just so many breeds or kinds

of dogs, that it’s almost hard to believe that they are all the same animal.

No matter how different one breed is from another, however, all dogs belong to the same

family. In addition, dogs are mammals that belong to the same family as coyotes, foxes, and

wolves. Like most mammals, they have hair or fur. Their hair could be curly or straight. It may

be long or short. It could even be thick or thin. Their hair might even feel rough or smooth and

maybe wiry or silky. It is usually the hair that comes in many colors such as black, brown, red,

yellow, gray, white, or even a mix of all of these colors that makes these lovable animals stand

out.

Today, most dogs are kept as pets. Keeping a dog as a pet is a huge responsibility. You have to

feed it, care for it, and give it all the attention and the space it needs. Therefore, it is important

to choose the right dog for you and your family. Some dogs are very friendly and gentle. They

even like to play with children. However, there are others that make good watchdogs like the

Doberman pinscher or German shepherd. Some dogs need lots of space to run. Others can live

in a small place like the Dachshund.

Dogs are highly emotional creatures. They react to the various emotions that surround them.

We can easily spot situations like these in movies and TV shows. They are very sensitive

creatures that they can notice if their owners are sad or angry. You will usually be able to detect

their response to each emotion through their tails. They wag their tails wildly if they are in a

happy or playful mood. They hide their tails between their legs if they are scared. Also, they go

all tense if they happen to be angry. Responsible owners should be sensitive to their pet dogs’

emotions as well. After all, your pet pooch may turn out to be your lifelong buddy.
